On Originality

Originality is the art of concealing one’s source. – Anonymous (Possibly)

I am of the school of thought that there are no new thoughts. Chances are that if your thought train arived at a particular location someone else got there some time ago.

I DO, however, believe in original action. You may not have been the first to think it but if you are the first to execute it…well then good on you. When your thought train arrives at a destination try getting out, stretching your legs and setting up shop.

STAKE A CLAIM

I know that’s kind of Heny Ford-esque thinking but just as talk without action is a null set, thought without execution is really nothing more than fantasy.

To be truly original you must not only have vision but a compatible skill set as well…even if that skill set just is knowing who to turn to when you find your own skill set lacking.

I take pictures…sometimes they turn out.

I’m just sayin…

Uh Oh… What did I miss?

I can see that from here

There is nothing wrong with alternative perspectives and they are, with good reason, actively encouraged. They have a way of casting a different light, highlighting features that were previously unacknowledged. Removing ones self from a given situation can allow a pause for reflection. The problem with isolation is that it’s perspective is always limited to a single dimension. There is something to be said for first hand knowledge. Everything else is filtered, no mater how transparent the situation may appear to be.

For the record…

This particular entity has no direction or focus. If one develops that’ll be ok too. If not? No difference.

New Years Day 2011

New Years Day 2011, originally uploaded by Weed Whacker.

I remember this day well. We started with a wonderful family breakfast and, as the weather was so great, opted to go for a walk on West Vancouver’s sea wall. It was a calm an clear day and reminded me to take a moment to stop and enjoy the simple beauty of life every once in a while.
I’m not talking about perpetual naval gazing. It’s hard to see where you are going if you are always looking at yourself. I’m talking about enjoying moments of peace and calm for what they are. So often today people feel a need to fill every void with activity. But you are allowed to enjoy a tranquil moment every now and then. If not…what are you rushing around for anyway?

Utah Bonsai Factory

Utah Bonsai Factory, originally uploaded by Weed Whacker.

I have many fond memories of my many road trips to and thru Utah. This photo was taken somewhere Hurricane on the way from St.George to Lake Powell. It was a great day driving and we made many unscheduled stops to just get out of the car and marvel the incredible scenery. I know that its considered desert and bad lands by some but it’s also extremely different than my home in the Pacific Northwest. If you ever get the opportunity to drive the southwest I highly recommend budgeting plenty of time for southern Utah.
